Funnel Ears Science.

Question: What will happen to the sound if I change the shape of a piece of paper? (e.g. from a flat shape to a funnel shape)

Links to research about Sound:

Hypothesis: (What do you think will happen?) e.g. I think that...
I think that it will be better if the sound will change. Because of that the sound is normal and clear. Nothing makes a difference.
Materials needed:
A Piece of Paper, tape and tissue or cotton.
Experiment (procedure):

e.g. Step 1 - First hold a flat piece of paper against your ear. Block your other ear with your hand. Get your partner to speak to you. What is the sound like? Can you hear clearly?

Step 2 - Next, roll the piece of paper into a funnel shape. Put the funnel against your ear. Face the funnel towards your partner and listen to them speak. What does it sound like? Can you hear clearly?

Step 3 - Next, face the funnel to the side while your partner speaks to you. Does it make a difference to the sound that you can hear?

Step 4 - Put some cotton balls or tissue paper into the funnel to block one end. Does it make a difference to the sound you hear?

Step 5 - Next, roll the piece of paper up and l

Data (What happened?)

Shape/object/materials
Results:
1
flat piece of paper
It sounds clear like you are having a conversation with someone. When you put the paper beside your ear it sounds normal and sounds like you are talking to a person, face to face.
2
funnel facing to the front
The sound was clear and it sounds like you turned up the volume. Well it sounds clear and you are able to hear properly . The sound makes no difference Like you are discussing something.
3
funnel facing to the side
It sounds like you are inside someone else head and its like you are whispering.
4
Tissue  blocking the narrow end of the funnel
Sounds like someone is whispering to you. And it sounds like a quiet person talking to you. But you really don't understand.
5
rolled up piece of paper (facing to the front)
When Rave talked into my ear it sound like her voice was bouncing off the paper and into my ears. Like echoing.

rolled up piece of paper (facing to the side)
It sounds like someone is trying to hear you but they can't because you are too far away. Like whispering.

Observations:
It turns out that some of my hypothesis was right. When the paper was flat and Rave talked . It sounded like she was having a conversation with me. Face to face. When we turned the paper into a funnel shape and we faced it to the front and let your partner speak. It sounded like it was clear and normal. When we had to put the funnel shape facing to the side. It sounded like someone was whispering to you and that it was good for the sound to change.. When we had to roll up the paper facing with a tissue blocking the front of the funnel. It sounded like Raves voice was bouncing off the inside of the paper and traveling into my ears.  The last thing we had to do was roll up the paper and face it to the side. It sounds like someone is trying to hear you but they can't because you are too far away. Like Whispering.

Conclusion:

We have noticed that the sound is louder when it is facing in front of you. With all the experiences of the paper is turns out that it kind of makes a difference to the sound traveling to your ears. But from the different angles that we held the funnel the sound was different. Some sounds sounded like someone was whispering to or shouting to you from across the room.

How Sound Effects Our Ears.

Do you know how music affects our ears?. Well when you listen to music and you have earphones on, if you put it up too loud it can really damage your ears.  When children sing it can become harmonies and puts passion into your feelings.
Around the world there are many different types of music like..... Pop, Hip Hop, Jazz, R & B and.. it goes on and on. In the community a lot of adults and kids love different types of music. Music is really important because it relaxes people . Sometimes it makes people happy and crazy, so they dance all silly.

Music can travel. By doing that , if you hit an object the sound bounces off and becomes sound waves. It travels into your ear canal then it moves to the inner ear and through the eustachian tube which sends all that music into your brain. Notes transform into the brain which remembers all those songs that you listen too. When you listen to music it brings back some good memories from the past. Songs can get you into the mood for dancing .

People all over the world love a lot of talented and creative artists. Like... for example Chris Brown, Will.i.am, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and other talented artists. All artists around the world love making music for people to know who they really are. Kids and adults love listening to music. I wonder who invented music?. Because I don't have an idea who invented music for New Zealand.

There are many instruments in New Zealand. Like a guitar, drums, flute, piano, violin and more wonderful instruments. Instruments make wonderful sounds. Some instruments make low sounds and some instruments makes high sounds. Some people get lessons to play an instrument they want to learn how to play in life.

We are very lucky to have music around New Zealand. Without music we would be listening to nothing but wind flowing past. And with not music it would be awkward for most people. In their lives they want to have something to listen to. Some parents love listening to music when they are cleaning.

I know that in the olden days their music was not Hip Hop music. There was just record players. And to play a C.D you have this disc with classical music. But that was the past. Now we have Hip Hop and other cool types of songs.  Are you glad that we have ears to listen for us?.

Sound: What Can You Hear?

There are many sounds around the community. The whole community is very grateful that they have ears to listen. Without your ears then you would hear nothing . Sound is like a track vibrating into your ears, its movement in your ears.

At school the sounds I hear are teachers having conversations with their students and I hear working sounds and kids learning about their tasks they have been given from their teacher.

When I come back from school the sounds that I hear are my little baby brothers trying to talk in a way that we can`t understand. And when I am in the kitchen I hear the jug boiling for my baby brothers milk and the sound of the dishes. When you hear people sing you can hear harmony`s going through your ears.

Whenever I am outside I hear kids laughing, dancing and singing. And by the way when I hear singing their voices are very unique and they really have a passion for singing. When you hear lovely voices it has that lovely sound come through and into your ears.

When you hear bad things travel to your ear ignore it. Because of that there are sometimes fights around of school and trust me you do not want to get involved. What ever you do don't hear those bad things they are saying.

At home the most annoying sound in my house is my little brothers crying in the night when I am trying to sleep for school. But its like i'm the babysitter. I really am trying to sleep but who cares anyways because I am always the first child to be up.

Annoying sounds that I hear at school are boys being mean and chatting and it just confuses me when I am trying to concentrate but I can`t. They are mainly in my class disturbing me and not concentrating on their own work. Oh and get this they try to copy .

Sounds I hear outside which means annoying sounds. Is boys fighting and teachers have to waste their time sorting it out. Some teachers always handle it and making sure it will never happen. Sometimes it is boys and sometimes girls. And trust if you get in trouble it doesn't get any better in life.

Immersion Assembly.

Wow!. We are back at school for term 2. I am so excited for another wonderful term. We had a assembly to find out what was a new theme for term 2. Our theme was I like to move it , move it. Every team had to show what they were going to learn and focus on for the term.

Every class in the school had different things to focus on. In team 5 our focus is physics: which is sound!. I can't wait to see what we are going to be learning about. By the way I had the shivers.

Term 1`s topic was the zoo and safety equipment. I really like that topic it sounded pretty cool. I felt like I wanted to go back to time and go back to a year 1. It was interesting to see they have worked hard on their movie. And they are having the chance to go to the zoo.

Term 2`s focus was flight, airplanes, thrust, drag and gravity. I really love planes but I have not been on one before in my life. That is strange, a girl who has not been on a plane. But anyways back to the story. The team 2 teachers were in costumes. One was wearing a plane, there was a helicopter and a pilot too. They made their costumes from their bare hands and painted there costumes lovely and it started out very well .  As I saw their video it blew my mind and it was magnificent.

Team 3`s focus for this term was .... For example light, colours and the speed of light. It was interesting and wonderful. It`s like it taught me something in life. Because it was was ... how do I put it. Umm it had very good vocab and a lot of topic words put it that way. It was like I wanted to spy on them to see what they are learning for this term. But yeah it was cool.

The fourth one was team 4. There focus was floating, sinking and bouyancy. DO you know what it means?. Because I have no idea what it means. I was so confused when they said that word. They had questions about the movie and who ever got it right they would get a chocolate fish. It was quite easy for the school and it turns out that it was easy. Because we got the information from the movie. It was very awesome .

And the last one is team 5. And you all know what we are learning about its sound. Its easy . I have a feeling this is going to be a wonderful term. I hope the others do. I can not wait what for what we are learning. Maybe we are learning about something easy or difficult.
